Mzanzi Tenors

Name

The Mzansi Tenors is a South African classical crossover vocal group founded in 2021 by Sipho Fubesi, a tenor and lecturer at the University of Cape Town (UCT). 

Origins and Mission

  • Foundation: Created as part of the RMB Talent Unlocked program.
  • Purpose: The group was formed to provide performance opportunities and income for talented young musicians, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Background: Sipho Fubesi, who previously performed opera in Europe and at the Royal Opera House, founded the group after returning to South Africa to teach music. 


Repertoire and Style

The group performs a blend of opera, “Afro-opera,” and classical crossover styles. Their repertoire includes: 

  • Originals: “Qaqamba Nyana Wam” (Shine, My Dear Son).
  • Classics & Popular Hits: “Ave Maria,” “You Raise Me Up,” “Circle of Life,” “Hallelujah,” and covers of Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best”.
  • Collaborations: They have performed alongside South African musicians such as Nadine. 


Notable Performances

  • RMB Starlight Classics: Their participation in 2022 helped launch their national reputation.
  • Theatres: Regularly perform at venues like Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre.
