Lizwi Choir

Who We Are

Lizwi (Voice)  Choir  is a 24-voice isiXhosa choral ensemble rooted in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, Cape Town — and owned entirely by the singers who built it. Founded in 2023, we are a self-managed collective of young artists whose voices have carried the spirit of Khayelitsha to stages in Paris, São Paulo, and across South Africa. The name Lizwi means “voice” in isiXhosa — and that is exactly what we are reclaiming. On Freedom Day, 27 April 2026, we relaunched as Lizwi Choir: independent, unified, and unstoppable.

Musical Style and Artistry

Rooted Sound, Global Reach: Our performances weave deep isiXhosa choral harmonies and traditional South African vocal music with contemporary arrangements and powerful, unified movement. What begins in a township hall in Khayelitsha has moved audiences to tears on international stages.

Pure Vocal Power: Lizwi Choir is a fully a cappella ensemble — 24 voices that need no amplification to fill a room. Our sound is rich, layered, and unmistakably African, built on close-harmony choral tradition passed down through generations and reimagined by young artists finding their own voice.

Original Repertoire: Much of what we sing, we wrote. Our music tells stories of home, identity, love, struggle, and joy — in the language of our ancestors, performed with the energy of our generation.

What Makes Lizwi Unique

We are not just a choir. We are a story of young people from one of Cape Town’s most vibrant communities who refused to let their talent be owned by anyone but themselves. The harmonies that went viral from Paris, the performances that travelled the world — that was us. And now the name on the poster belongs to us too.

When you book Lizwi Choir, you are not just booking a performance. You are supporting a movement of artistic self-determination rooted in Khayelitsha — and giving your audience an experience they will never forget.
