Africa Soul takes the sound of classic soul and blues and gives it a distinctly South African voice.
Drawing from the music of artists such as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding, the group reworks songs from the 1950s and 1960s with African harmonies, rhythms and lyrics. The result is familiar music that feels fresh rather than simply recreated.
It is a meeting point between two musical traditions. Songs rooted in the American South are reshaped through voices and influences from the African South, giving older audiences something to recognise while introducing those classics to a new generation.
Africa Soul is made up of eight vocalists, a keyboard player and a djembe drummer, with the ensemble including experienced professional singers and performers connected to the Soweto Gospel Choir.
Their repertoire goes beyond American soul classics too. Well-known African songs and a mix of other musical styles give the group room to change the mood of a performance without losing the strong vocal sound at the centre of the act.
Africa Soul works particularly well for corporate events, private functions and theatrical performances where the music needs to feel polished without becoming predictable.
Rich harmonies, powerful voices and an unusual take on familiar songs give the group its own identity. It is classic soul seen through a different lens, bringing the music of another era back to the stage in a way that feels much more current.
