His dad was a session musician and from a young age “the little fatman”, then known as Johan, loved watching his daddy in action on stage. After finishing school in Groblersdal, Johan studied music at a an academy in Pretoria and through Unisa, and then spent a year with the SANDF Entertainment Group before settling in Bela Bela with his wife Susan, who is also a music teacher, and their two children. His audition performance of Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis” was enough to get both Kahn and Bobby to turn for him but it was his larger-than-life stage presence and personality that really got the coaches belly laughing. Fatman chose Khan, who admitted that he loved the timbre in his voice and his understanding of the song.
