One of the most instantly identifiable stand-up comedians in South Africa is Kurt Schoonraad. He resonates with audiences throughout South Africa and beyond with his grounded humour and comedic versatility; he even made the front page of the New York Times.

The comedian and actor claims that growing up in Mitchell’s Plain, one of the biggest townships in Cape Town, had a significant impact on the development of his sense of humour and comedic style.

Nearly twenty years ago, Kurt’s professional comedy career took off. During that period, he has been performing stand-up comedy on stage regularly. He has also produced and performed his wildly popular one-man shows across the nation.

Kurt first gained notoriety as the eccentric unintentional traveller on the popular television show “Going Nowhere Slowly.” Since then, he has been recognised as one of South Africa’s most beloved television characters. He has hosted game shows, made appearances in the popular BBC series “Who Do You Think You Are?”, and appeared in Comedy Central presents Kurt Schoonraad. He has starred in a number of big-screen projects; the most recent one was the critically acclaimed, internationally acclaimed South African film “Skeem.”

From its modest festival beginnings, Kurt pioneered Cape Town Comedy Club, which is now Cape Town’s only venue exclusively dedicated to international stand-up comedy. The club has an exciting permanent home at the historic Pumphouse at the V&A Waterfront. It was recently announced that the club is among the top 10 comedy clubs worldwide.
