abavuki marimba and brass

Since 2001, Langa, Cape Town’s Abavuki Afro-Fusion World Music Ensemble has energised audiences across SA and abroad.

These excellent musicians combine brass (trumpet, sax, trombone) with African drums, percussion, and marimbas. Their colourful, contemporary Mzansi style is rooted in African music and influenced by kwaito, jazz, and Latin American rhythms. Abavuki’s song celebrates resilience, camaraderie, and daily delight, making it famous locally and internationally.

IsiXhosa “Abavuki” means ‘Wake up, early birds!’ Abavuki’s dynamic, upbeat music represents the band’s cheerful outlook on life, despite their difficult backgrounds, and their music-making style.

Abavuki celebrated 21 years of playing together in December 2022 and are working on a new record and greater touring from 2023 forward with all markets open.
Abavuki are using their former success and touring to advance their career.

Successful accomplishments include receiving IMEXSA 2015 Export of the Year, releasing five albums, and being selected for Womex 2014 and Visa For Music 2014.
