Who would have thought Cito, the WONDERBOOM vocalist would land the lead role in the Pieter Torien production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ with Andrew Lloyd Webber, the show’s mastermind, on viewing Cito’s audition film saying “One of the best I’ve seen, since Ian Gillian (Deep Purple)”
So WONDERBOOM recorded their new album “City Of Gold” in a way they never have before – apart from themselves, their talent and instruments they had …. time! No gigs for four months, the first break the band had in nine years.
With all the media exposure Cito and the band have enjoyed of late – especially TV (eg Top Billing) the demand for the new CD as well as to see Cito, Martin, Danny and Wade live in concert has reached an unprecedented high.
At the end of 2005, WONDERBOOM released “All The Hits”, a ‘best of CD’ featuring 3 brand new singles including current hit “Love Crash”, and again cement themselves as South Africa’s sure-fire crowd-pleasing funk rock outfit. Formed in the late nineties from members of already-popular bands The Electric Petals and Eight-Legged Groove Machine, this high-energy foursome pumps our unique original music that has made WONDERBOOM the highlight of many a music festival, a crowd-pulling solo act at every major live music venue in the country, and the natural choice to open for the top international touring bands like Live and Simple Minds.
With “All The Hits” they now have six albums under their belts, 2004’s all Afrikaans “Hoekom? a tribute to the songs of the most influential singers and songwriters of the day, given an unmistakeable WONDERBOOM flavour in ways their creators never thought possible. With this new string to their bow, WONDERBOOM became a truly bilingual floor stomping, roof-raising rock experience and added the prestigious “Kanna” award vir ‘Beste Prestasie in Pop, Rock & Jazz’ won at this year’s Klein Karoo Kunstefees, to their many other trophies - including People magazine’s “Best S.A. Band” Crystal Award in 2003.
Like any great live act, WONDERBOOM works because of its perfect mix of charismatic individuals. Flamboyant “lead drummer” Danny De Wet and energetic bassist Wade Williams command the stage with a presence few lead singers in other bands possess, while laying down a passionate rock-solid foundation that has the dance-floor churning. Up front, guitarist Martin Schofield and vocalist Cito handle verbal and visual pyrotechnics- these guys have lots of interesting tattoos, and they are not scared to show them off! In between preening 70’s glam stars and snarling like punks, they find the irresistible riot and colour that is WONDERBOOM.
In December 2004, the years of touring and studio graft paid off, when WONDERBOOM represented South Africa at the Global Battle of the Bands in London, and finished second in a field of 16 bands from all over the world. There can be few South Africa music fans who aren’t familiar with their hits, like Never Ever, Jafta Rebel, Something Wrong, Africa and Charlie. The last of these, shot off their third album to the top of 5FM charts. The original Rabbitt hit was re-imagined with inimitable WONDERBOOM style as “Kwaito-Rock”- the first of its kind.
With a keen eye on what the crowds want, and an ever-inventive approach to their music, WONDERBOOM has developed a longevity in the top echelons of South African music that few bands can aspire to, and they are committed to extending that dominance in 2005. As long as there’s a crowd to please and a socket to plug an amp into, they’re set to remain the sexiest, funkiest, most obvious choice to get any party started….
