South Africa’s Foremost Party Band

Combination of Motown, Rock, Reggae & Party Songs

Defining themselves as the “band with the groove” Tokyo Groove has managed to combine the very best of Motown with South African legends and the latest Top 40 hits in a stylish, energetic performance that ensures that once the dance floor opens … it stays open!

Tokyo Groove exploded onto the main-stream music scene with their debut hit single “Get Down Saturday Night” in 2009. The track charted nationally and hit Number 1 in both Cape Town and Johanessburg, adding to the band’s phenomenal reputation and increasing their demand in the festival and mainstream circuit. 2010 ended with another hit single as “Celebration” reached Number 1 again in both Cape Town and Johanessburg, “That’s The Way Love Is” in 2011 confirming the bands reputation and proving that they were here to stay.

Six years after the inception of the group, the band is still enjoying their phenomenal success & well-earned reputation as one of the most consistent and reliable Party Bands in the market place. As their primary focus is on entertaining their audience with their live performances, recording an album was never a priority for Tokyo Groove but … giving their audience what they wanted was … so after many, many requests, Tokyo Groove took some of their favourite songs and released “VI”  towards the end of 2014, recognizing their six years of success.

Primarily a Corporate Band, this incredibly dynamic group has been performing at SA’s Top Events since early 2008 and has earned themselves a reputation for professionalism, quality and a really good party.  From their sophisticated appearance through to their versatile repertoire and overall professionalism, Tokyo Groove has become a favourite on the Corporate Scene.

Their reputation speaks for itself with repeated bookings by SA’s Top Blue Chip Clients and performances at some of South Africa’s most prestigious events and after-parties, including The Launch of The MSC Sinfonia, Emperors Summer Holiday Festival, The Nedbank Golf Challenge, Welcoming Miss World, Miss South Africa, The 94.7’s Nando’s Peri Peri Cruise,  New Year’s Eve Party at the Super Bowl (Sun City) two years in a row, Vodacom, Coca-Cola Namibia and dozens of corporate events for companies like Telkom, Engen, Impala Platinum, Bidvest, Standard Bank, Absa Bank, FNB, Nedbank etc. as well as a number of private events and weddings.!

So what is the secret of their success?

As with everything in the music industry, it’s a combination of talent and hard work. Their repertoire is extensive, the talent undeniable and the performance is mesmerising. The band has an incredible presence on stage and Sangoma’s vocal ability never cease’s to amaze audiences as he adapts to each and every genre effortlessly.

One of SA’s most prolific and energetic front men, Sangoma has a wealth of experience behind him which comes through at each and every show. Having spent over six years with Tokyo Groove and five years prior to that in the music industry, including being the front man for Denim, he has had the opportunity to perform to the crème de la crème both locally and internationally.

As a standard, Tokyo Groove performs as a 7 Piece Band however due to the fluid nature of the band, and diversity of their music, they often adapt to incorporate different musicians and band structures (3; 5 ; 7 ; 9 & 12 Piece).

Focusing on the Classic Party Tracks from Motown, like September, Lady Soul etc to well known reggae numbers from Bob Marley to the latest Top 40 Hits from artists like Pharrell Williams & Swedish Mafia etc. the music is always accessible and adapted for each event.

The introduction of DJ Groove a few years back, offered clients a complete entertainment package with the option of a Themed Set (African, Jazz, Motown) followed by their standard Party Set and topped off with DJ Groove hitting the decks and taking the party through to the very end!

Standard Band - 7 Piece      *Themed Shows Available

The seven piece band, comprising of Sangoma on Lead Vocals & Guitar, Bass Guitar, Lead Guitar, Drums, Keyboards, Saxophone & Backing Vocals, fills the stage and adds a phenomenal energy to the performance bringing certain panache to the experience with the inclusion of their saxophonist and backing vocalists that truly brings the music to life.

The standard set comprises of 2 party sets but can be adapted to incorporate a chilled dinner or one of their very popular themed shows followed by a party set.

Optional - 5 Piece      *Themed Shows Available

For the more intimate events, Tokyo Groove performs as a five piece band which includes either a backing vocalist or saxophonist, a keyboard player, a drummer and a bass player.

The music is still based on the same selection of cross-cultural songs that span over decades and is perfect for both corporate clients and clubs alike, it’s simply the size of the band that is reduced to allow for the smaller events where space can be limited.

Optional - 12 Piece with Full Brass Section      *Themed Shows Available

Take your mind back to the 50’s where everything was LIVE, the bands were impressive, not just because of their music but because of the energy and dynamics of 12 musicians live on stage, interacting with their instruments and each other to create real, soulful music and this is your Golden Band.

Tokyo Groove adds an additional 5 Brass players to their already existing 7 Piece band and brings all the classic motown songs to life whilst giving a new dimension to your newer contemporary tracks

Optional - 3 Piece with Backing Tracks

Tokyo Groove will also do, on request, a Three Piece Option consisting of Sangoma, Bass Guitar and Saxophone for events with restricted budgets or space available. As this option doesn’t require any backline and with the exclusion of the drums, clients are able to keep budgets and sound levels down.
